Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.
The game tasks players with traversing through various levels and defeating challenging boss enemies. The vintage 1930s cartoon aesthetic is reflected in the gameplay mechanics.
Players have a basic moveset, including running, jumping, shooting, and dashing. These controls feel tight and precise, allowing for the quick reflexes and split-second timing that the game demands. This responsive control scheme is crucial for navigating the game's intense, pattern-based boss fights.
Throughout the adventure, players can acquire a variety of different weapons and shoot types. These include a standard peashooter, a spread shot, a chaser shot that tracks enemies, and a lobber that arcs projectiles. Players can equip two different weapons at a time and switch between them on the fly, adapting their playstyle to the specific needs of each boss encounter.
The core of the gameplay loop revolves around defeating a series of increasingly difficult boss battles. Each boss has its own unique attack patterns, transformations, and phases that players must learn and master. Defeating a boss often requires dozens of attempts, but the sense of accomplishment upon victory is hugely rewarding.
The game introduces a parry mechanic that adds an additional layer of strategy to the gameplay. Certain enemy attacks can be "parried" by precisely timing a mid-air bounce off of them. Successfully parrying fills up the player's super meter, allowing them to unleash powerful special attacks. Mastering the parry timing is crucial for optimizing one's damage output against the bosses.
While the game is extremely challenging, the structure allows for incremental progress and a sense of momentum. Upon failing a boss fight, players immediately respawn at the beginning of that battle, allowing them to immediately try again. Additionally, any progress made in the form of acquired weapons, damage dealt, or boss phases witnessed carries over, incentivizing players to persist through the difficulty.
The game supports local cooperative play, allowing a second player to join in. This co-op mode adds an additional layer of coordination and strategy, as players must work together to overcome the challenges. The ability to revive a fallen partner also provides a valuable safety net.
