For the first time in over 20 years, we are heralding the return of a much loved piece of gaming history with the classic RPG, Wasteland! Mutants. Again. Even more than there were last time: they seem to materialize out of the very grains of the radioactive desert sand. Venomous yellow eyes.
You take control of a party of Desert Rangers, a group of stalwart lawmen tasked with investigating threats to the remnants of humanity in a retro-futuristic, radioactive wasteland following a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. This classic post-apocalyptic role-playing game (RPG) originally released in 1988.
A key strength is the ability to fully customize your party of up to four characters. You can allocate points across a wide range of attributes and skills, from combat abilities like Rifles and Explosive Devices to utility-focused skills like Picking Locks and Toaster Repair. This deep character customization allows you to approach challenges in a variety of ways to suit your playstyle.
The open-ended game world provides a high degree of freedom and agency. Multiple paths and solutions exist for most quests and obstacles, allowing you to engage through combat, stealth, diplomacy, or a combination. Your choices have persistent consequences, shaping the world around you. This emphasis on player agency and reactive storytelling was groundbreaking for the time.
Combat is turn-based, requiring you to carefully manage your party's limited ammunition, health, and skills to overcome enemy threats. Random encounters in the open world can be punishing, forcing tough choices about whether to engage or avoid. Success often hinges on leveraging your party's unique capabilities and thorough preparation.
Effectively managing your party's inventory and resources is crucial. You must balance carrying capacity, ammunition, and consumable items to ensure your Rangers are equipped for the rigors of the wasteland. Progression comes through gaining experience points and leveling up characters, unlocking new skills and abilities. However, the game's unforgiving autosave system can punish poor decisions or party member deaths with permanent consequences.
