Welcome to Unholy Heights, a mashup of Tower Defense and Apartment Management Simulation!
As the Devil, you convert a tenement building into housing for various monsters. Your objective is to attract and manage these monster tenants, keeping them happy by providing the amenities they desire, while also using them to defend the building from invading heroes.
The core of the gameplay revolves around managing your monster tenants. You must carefully select which monsters to allow to rent rooms, as each monster type has its own unique strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Satisfying the demands of the tenants, such as providing certain furniture or decorations, is crucial to keeping them happy and ensuring they can effectively defend the building. You must also monitor the financial status of your tenants, as those who fall behind on rent may choose to skip out entirely, leaving you without their defensive capabilities. Additionally, you can encourage your tenants to find mates and have children, creating a new generation of stronger monsters to aid in battle.
When heroes attempt to invade the building and reach the Devil's room, you must call upon your monster tenants to defend. By knocking on the doors of the rooms, you can summon the residents to battle, positioning them strategically to create effective defensive formations. The combat is real-time, requiring you to time your door knocks carefully to ensure your monsters engage the invaders at the optimal moments. As the game progresses, the heroes become increasingly formidable, requiring you to carefully upgrade and position your monsters to overcome the challenges.
One of the key strengths of the game is the way it encourages emergent gameplay and narrative through the interactions of the monster tenants. You become invested in the lives of your tenants, watching as they find mates, have children, and even fall into financial troubles. The procedurally generated nature of the tenants' occupations, hobbies, and desires adds an element of unpredictability, keeping you on your toes as you adapt to the changing dynamics within the building. The humorous and often dark tone of the game's narrative also contributes to its unique charm and appeal.
The game offers a good degree of replayability, as you can experiment with different strategies and monster combinations to unlock new units and upgrade your defenses. The procedurally generated elements ensure that each playthrough feels somewhat different, encouraging you to try new approaches. Additionally, the ability to customize the rooms and apartments with various furnishings and decorations allows you to put your own stamp on the building, further enhancing the sense of ownership and investment in the game world.
