In order to save their school after it turns into a massive demonic castle, two "Demon Hunter" sisters slash and shoot their way through this 2D action adventure. Players can swap between control of both characters on the fly, each with entirely different skillsets.
The gameplay revolves around fast-paced 2D platforming and combat. Players can seamlessly swap between controlling the two main characters, Shinobu and Maya. Shinobu plays as a long-range fighter with higher health, while Maya is a short-range brawler with higher damage output but lower health. This dynamic encourages players to strategically alternate between the characters to handle different enemy types effectively. The controls feel smooth and responsive, requiring precise timing and maneuverability during platforming sections. Enemies and bosses provide a solid challenge, with their attack patterns demanding careful dodging and counterattacking. Mastering the use of each character's unique sub-weapons, such as projectile attacks, area-of-effect abilities, and movement-enhancing tools, is crucial for overcoming obstacles and defeating powerful foes.
Players unlock a wide array of offensive and utility sub-weapons as they progress through the game. These sub-weapons can be freely swapped during gameplay, allowing players to adapt their strategies to the current situation. Some sub-weapons excel at clearing out crowds of enemies, while others are better suited for dealing with specific boss patterns. Experimenting with different combinations of sub-weapons and character abilities adds depth to the combat and exploration.
Although not a traditional Metroidvania, the game features elements of backtracking and exploration. After defeating the initial set of levels, players can revisit previous areas with their newfound abilities and sub-weapons, accessing previously inaccessible paths and discovering hidden secrets, such as valuable items and power-ups. The level design encourages thorough exploration, with branching paths and alternate routes that can only be accessed by utilizing the right combination of skills and sub-weapons.
The game's local co-op mode allows two players to tackle the challenges together, controlling Shinobu and Maya simultaneously. This added layer of strategy and synergy requires players to communicate and work together to make the most of their characters' strengths. The ability to revive a fallen partner provides a safety net, making the co-op experience more approachable for players of different skill levels. The co-op mode brings an additional level of enjoyment to the game, allowing friends to experience the action-packed combat and exploration together.
