Survival is just the beginning. Six years have passed since the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the survivors, tracks the president's kidnapped daughter to a secluded European village, where there is something terribly wrong with the locals.
The developers removed the original game's cumbersome quick-time events, replacing them with a new parry and dodge system. This allows players to more actively engage in combat encounters, timing their blocks and counterattacks precisely for a "Souls-like" challenge and sense of mastery.
The remake's gunplay and aiming mechanics have undergone significant refinement. Players can no longer rely on the automatic aim-assist red dot sight available for all weapons in the original. Instead, they must hone their own aiming skills, adding a higher degree of challenge but also a greater sense of accomplishment when mastering the combat.
Enemies are now more aggressive and unpredictable, no longer simply stopping and waiting to be shot. This forces players to adopt a more tactical and adaptive approach, utilizing stealth, environmental awareness, and weapon upgrades to gain the upper hand in frantic combat encounters.
The inventory management system has been streamlined and improved, allowing for quicker weapon swapping and organization. Players can now craft ammunition and healing items on the fly, adding an extra layer of strategy and resource management to the experience.
The inclusion of a dedicated knife with limited but renewable durability encourages players to utilize it strategically, both for combat and for conserving ammunition. Mastering the knife parry mechanic is essential for efficiently dispatching enemies.
The remake features expanded exploration opportunities, with more optional areas, side quests, and collectibles to discover. While sometimes repetitive, these diversions provide meaningful rewards in the form of valuable upgrades and resources, enhancing the game's replayability and sense of exploration.
