The year is 1996 and you’re employed by a science lab called Nova Nexus. You work as a security guard at the front gate to the lab, inside a guard booth. However, tonight it seems something important is happening inside of Nova Nexus and things are... well... a little strange.
You play as a security guard tasked with checking the license plates of vehicles entering the Nova Nexus research facility. When a car arrives at the gate, you must go to the booth window, read the license plate, and search the computer system to confirm the driver is an authorized employee. This simple task becomes more demanding as the number of arriving cars increases, forcing you to quickly memorize which plates you've already verified.
Your decisions about which vehicles to admit or deny have significant consequences. Letting in unauthorized personnel, turning away approved employees, or allowing certain key events to occur will progress the story down different narrative paths, unlocking one of the game's 7 unique endings.
To inject variety into each playthrough, the order and types of vehicles that arrive at the gate are randomized. However, the pivotal story moments and progression remain consistent, encouraging you to replay the game and uncover new details about the mysterious activities at Nova Nexus.
Beyond the core license plate verification, you can freely explore the security booth and its surrounding environment. As strange occurrences happen, you can investigate the booth, read notes and computer records, and gather clues about the facility's true purpose.
The gameplay maintains a deliberate, methodical pace, gradually building a sense of creeping dread and unease as you carry out your mundane duties. Sudden noises, unsettling messages, and unexplained phenomena keep you on edge, even during the routine task of verifying employee access.
