The player controls the heroic DeathSpank on his quest to find a mysterious artifact. The combat system features a simple, hack-and-slash approach, allowing players to attack enemies with a basic melee strike and unlock special "Justice" abilities as a meter fills up. Players can quickly swap between up to four equipped weapons using the shoulder buttons, providing variety in their offensive options. As players progress, they'll find and equip increasingly powerful weapons and armor, granting incremental boosts to damage and defense. The progression system is straightforward, with players leveling up and choosing from a selection of three passive "hero cards" that provide bonuses like the ability to use higher-level gear or deal more damage.

Exploration is a key part of the experience, as the open world contains a variety of environments to discover, from lush forests to treacherous dungeons. Players will encounter numerous enemies to defeat, as well as chests and containers that reward a steady stream of new equipment. The loot system automatically equips the best available gear, allowing players to focus on combat and narrative.
