“FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water” comes to Steam for the first time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the horror-adventure series FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO. The game is set on sacred Mt. Hikami, a site of many mysterious and terrifying incidents.
Players use the Camera Obscura, a special camera capable of repelling vengeful ghosts, to fend off the malicious spirits that haunt the sacred Mt. Hikami. Taking well-timed photographs of the ghosts' weak points deals maximum damage, filling up a Shutter Chance meter for a powerful finishing shot. Different types of film, each with unique strengths, add strategic depth to the combat.
The three playable protagonists - Yuri, Miu, and Ren - possess the "Shadow Reading" ability, allowing them to sense the remnants of memories and feelings left behind by the disappeared. These supernatural insights provide crucial clues that lead players deeper into the dark secrets of Mt. Hikami.
Players will venture through a variety of eerie environments, from abandoned shrines and villages to underwater caverns. While the game does feature some repetition of locations, revisiting these areas as different protagonists uncovers additional secrets and story details.
Each protagonist has their own story arc and ending, motivating players to experience the game multiple times. Unlockable outfits, accessories, and a bonus Ayane chapter from the Ninja Gaiden series further encourage repeat playthroughs. The scoring and ranking system also give players a reason to improve their performance in each chapter.
