Arkos is a first-person fantasy shooter with destructible voxel environment inspired by the classic retro shooters from 90-s
As the white wizard Arkos, players venture into the dungeons of an ancient castle, navigating a unique voxel-based environment. The partially destructible world allows players to blast apart the pixelated scenery, leaving behind a trail of voxel debris. This dynamic destruction adds a satisfying, tactile element to the exploration.
Players wield an arsenal of 7 distinct magical staves, each with their own firing properties. One staff fires rapid-fire projectiles, while another unleashes a shotgun-like spread. Importantly, all weapons share a common mana pool, forcing players to carefully manage their ammunition usage and select the appropriate tool for each encounter.
Level design emphasizes exploration, as players must search for hidden secrets and passages to advance. Many levels contain destructible objects that can reveal shortcuts or uncover important items. In some cases, the main path forward is hidden behind these secret areas, encouraging thorough, puzzle-solving-focused exploration.
Each of the game's 7 episodes culminates in a boss battle, representing the most intense and engaging moments. Players must utilize their full arsenal of weapons and mana management skills to overcome these powerful foes, adding a sense of climactic progression to the experience.
The gameplay in Arkos authentically captures the feel of classic 1990s first-person shooters. This is reflected in design choices such as the lack of a jump button (with automatic traversal of small gaps), the use of a unified mana pool for all weapons, and the overall linear, level-based structure. These retro-inspired mechanics situate the experience firmly within the classic shooter genre.
