Greetings. Your Mind Scanner request has been approved. Your duty is to diagnose and treat the citizens of The Structure. The patient list is long so don't waste your time. We’ll let you see your daughter soon...
As a "Mind Scanner", you take on the role of a professional tasked with diagnosing and treating the citizens of a dystopian metropolis known as "The Structure". The core gameplay loop challenges you to interact with various patients, assess their mental state, and utilize a variety of specialized devices to treat their "insanity".
Effective time management and resource allocation are crucial. Each in-game day, you must balance treating patients, earning money through successful treatments, and investing in new diagnostic and treatment tools. Failing to earn enough money can result in expulsion from The Structure, abruptly ending your campaign. This delicate balance creates constant tension as you decide how to best utilize your limited time and resources.
When meeting a patient, you first diagnose their mental state through a Rorschach-style inkblot test. Based on the patient's responses, you must select the appropriate "insanity" afflicting the individual. You then choose from an array of specialized treatment devices, represented as arcade-style minigames that you must complete within a time limit. The available devices and complexity of these minigames increase as you progress and unlock new technology. Successfully treating a patient earns you money and research points, which you can use to develop additional diagnostic and treatment tools.
A core narrative element is the series of moral choices you face regarding your patients. While the game encourages treatment and restoration of mental health, some methods can inadvertently strip the patient of their personality and individuality. This creates difficult decisions - do you opt for the faster, more efficient but dehumanizing treatment, or take the time to preserve the patient's sense of self at the cost of valuable resources? These choices and their outcomes significantly impact your standing within The Structure, as well as the overall narrative.
With multiple possible endings based on your choices and actions, combined with randomized patient encounters, the game offers a high degree of replayability. The emphasis on morally-grey decision making encourages experimentation, as you seek to uncover all the possible outcomes and narratives.
