Stigmatized Property, 事故物件 (Jiko bukken) is a horror game inspired by haunted apartment rooms in Japan. These properties are known to have cheap rents and you play to find out the exact reason why.
The game primarily consists of exploration and puzzle-solving. Players navigate a creepy, atmospheric Japanese neighborhood and apartment complex, carefully searching the environment to collect items and solve simple challenges. The VHS film aesthetic, including visual effects like film grain and blur, creates an immersive and suspenseful atmosphere that enhances the exploration experience.
Players must traverse the dark, unsettling streets and alleyways, guided only by the game's moody lighting and unsettling ambiance. One unique mechanic allows players to enable a "head bob" effect, causing the protagonist to sway and appear unsteady as they walk. This subtle touch helps characterize the player character as timid and vulnerable, adding to the overall sense of unease.
While the game is light on traditional puzzles, there are a few item-based challenges that players must solve to progress the story. These often involve finding specific items and using them in the correct locations. The lack of an inventory system can create minor frustrations, as players must carefully manage the items they are holding. However, this also contributes to the tension, as players must navigate the environment while constantly aware of their limited carrying capacity.
The game features two possible endings, based on the player's actions and choices throughout the experience. Achieving the "good" ending requires players to explore the environment thoroughly and collect all the necessary items, adding a layer of replayability.
