The first game in the Utawarerumono trilogy of story-rich tactics RPGs. Into a world filled with verdant nature, populated by folk with fluffy ears and fuzzy tails, awakens Hakuowlo, a man of masked mien and missing memory.
The game features a tactical RPG combat system that developers have seamlessly integrated into the overall visual novel experience. Players position their party members on grid-based maps and command them to attack, use abilities, or move around the battlefield. Each character has various stats like attack, defense, and magic defense that determine their effectiveness in combat.
The combat system offers depth and customization options. Players can equip characters with different weapons and armor, which affect their stats. Additionally, as characters level up, players can choose to invest their earned Battle Points (BP) into increasing the character's attack, defense, or magic defense.
One notable feature is the ability to perform devastating cooperative attacks. If two allied characters are positioned next to each other, they can launch co-op attacks that can quickly turn the tide of battle.
While the combat is fun, many reviewers noted that it is not particularly challenging, even on the higher difficulty settings. The game includes a convenient rewind function that allows players to undo their moves, making the battles more accessible. Some players felt the difficulty curve was too easy, with characters becoming overpowered later in the game.
The integration of the tactical RPG elements with the visual novel format is generally well-received. The combat serves as a break from the extensive reading, providing an interactive element to the overall experience. However, some reviewers felt the combat was a bit "tacked on" and could have been more deeply integrated into the narrative.
