Berlin 1933. “Adolf Hitler is chancellor!” We all know the consequences this message bore. Unspeakable horrors and suffering would sweep across the world. Few would stand and fight the monstrosity that was the German Reich. Will you? Lead an underground resistance group Through the Darkest of Times.
Players can recruit up to five unique members to join their resistance group, each with their own backgrounds, political affiliations, and skills. This allows players to assemble a diverse team, leveraging the strengths of individual members to tackle a variety of resistance activities. For example, a communist metal worker may excel at sabotage missions, while a conservative lawyer is better suited for gathering intelligence.
On a weekly basis, players assign their party members to carry out various resistance activities. These include collecting funds, recruiting new supporters, and sabotaging Nazi infrastructure. The success of these activities depends on the skills and risks associated with each party member. Players must carefully balance their need for resources, support, and undermining the regime, all while minimizing the danger of being caught and facing severe consequences.
Throughout the campaign, players encounter numerous choice-based scenarios that challenge their moral convictions. These decisions often involve weighing the potential benefits against the risks, knowing that their choices can lead to significant and lasting consequences, both for their resistance group and the people they aim to protect. For instance, players may have to decide whether to prioritize rescuing a trapped family member or completing a high-impact sabotage mission.
The game is divided into several chapters, each covering a different period of the Nazi regime's rise and consolidation of power. While players cannot alter the overarching historical narrative, their actions and choices within each chapter can lead to unique outcomes and experiences. This, combined with the randomly generated party members and resistance activities, provides a good degree of replayability as players strive to optimize their strategies and uncover new narrative paths.
Many players have found the gameplay in Through the Darkest of Times to be quite challenging, with a high degree of risk and uncertainty. Missions can frequently fail, and the consequences can be severe, ranging from the loss of valuable resources to the capture or death of resistance members. This sense of tension and fragility reflects the precarious nature of the resistance movement and the ruthlessness of the Nazi regime. While some players have found the difficulty level frustrating, others have appreciated how it reinforces the hopelessness and desperation of the historical context.
